Key Features

The forecast for economic growth in 1999-2000 has been revised up to 3½ per cent from the 1999-2000 Budget forecast of 3 per cent. Growth of 3¾ per cent is forecast in 2000-01.

The fiscal balance is estimated to be $4.9 billion in surplus in 1999-2000 - $555 million lower than estimated at the time of the 1999-2000 Budget. Continued surpluses are projected for 2000-01 to 2002-03.

The combination of sound fiscal policy, low interest rates and inflation and an improved international outlook should continue to underpin Australia's favourable economic performance.
