economic priorities

The Government's social and economic priorities provide the framework for the 2001-02 Budget. These include:

|
- maintaining a strong financial position for the Commonwealth while cutting taxes
|
addressing these priorities will improve our living standards
|
- maintaining a fair and effective social safety net while at the same time encouraging greater participation in the work force
|
|
|
- strengthening our social and economic infrastructure, especially in rural and regional Australia.
|
|
|
The 2001-02 Budget delivers a number of initiatives that target these priorities. These measures will:
|
|
|
- provide additional support for older Australians, and recognise the service of our veterans
|
this Budget provides greater incentives for economic and
social participation
|
- build a more active participation-based social safety net to substantially improve our welfare system
|
|
|
- ensure that Australia's health care system continues to provide high quality outcomes
|
|
|
- build on initiatives in recent budgets aimed at developing the social and economic infrastructure of rural and regional Australia
|
|
|
- further develop practical measures to assist indigenous Australians
|
|
|
- safeguard our natural resources
|
|
|
- improve the competitiveness of Australian business.
