Budget Priorities

Australians Working Together

 

The Government is committed to building a stronger and fairer Australia.

additional funding is being invested to substantially improve our welfare system

This Budget provides a substantial up-front investment of $1.7 billion over four years to build a more active participation-based social safety net to substantially improve our welfare system.

 

The returns from this investment will provide a future where there are fewer families without jobs and stronger, more robust communities.

more assistance

More services are to be provided to assist people to become job ready and to find jobs. The package provides for:

 
  • Job Search Training to be made available to all unemployed people after three months
  • a new Transition to Work programme
  • a significant expansion of employment assistance and education opportunities
  • more practical support for indigenous Australians.

a welfare system that encourages training and rewards work

The Government will improve financial incentives so that people on income support will be better rewarded when they undertake available work, even if it is intermittent or irregular. It will also assist people who help themselves by undertaking training or work experience.

 

The package includes:

  • the introduction of a Working Credit
  • the introduction of Training Credits
  • a Literacy and Numeracy Training Supplement
  • a `Participation Pack' to assist Parenting Payment recipients.
