Management of Australia's uranium resources

The Government will provide $10.6 million over four years to promote the safe management of Australia's uranium resources. The initiatives are consistent with the Government's policy to promote the development of the resource industry to increase employment and deliver other economic benefits in regional areas, particularly for Indigenous communities. The initiatives comprise:

  • improving outcomes for Indigenous communities from uranium exploration and mining;
  • reducing restrictions on transportation of uranium in Australia and overseas;
  • streamlining regulation to ensure world's best practice environmental and safety regulation;
  • radiation safety training for the uranium industry; and
  • establishing a national dose register to record the radiological dose history of uranium industry workers.

This measure delivers on the Government's election commitment.

Supporting Regional Tourism — project funding

The Government will provide $2.3 million in 2008‑09 to implement a range of regional tourism projects. The projects have been designed to support various local tourism strategies, and will require engagement with local Councils and State Governments for their delivery.

The cost of this measure will be met from within existing resourcing of the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.

This measure delivers on the Government's election commitment.

World Youth Day 2008 — additional funding

The Government will provide $20.0 million in 2007‑08 towards activities associated with World Youth Day to be held between 15 to 20 July 2008 in Sydney, New South Wales. Funding will compensate the racing industry for costs associated with the relocation from, and loss of access to, Randwick Racecourse during the event. The New South Wales Government will provide matching funding.

This measure delivers on the Government's election commitment.

Australian Energy Market Operator — establishment

The Government will provide $6.6 million in 2008‑09 to fund preparatory work required to establish the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) as agreed by the Council of Australian Governments. Once established the AEMO will take over the role of the National Electricity Market Management Company and the different jurisdictional gas market operators, which currently administer both the electricity and gas markets.

The costs of the preparatory work will initially be met by the Government, and recovered from industry when the AEMO is operational.

Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Facility — environmental impact assessment

The Government will provide $3.8 million over two years from 2008‑09 to extend and complete an environmental impact assessment process for a potential Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Facility.

A Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Facility will give Australia the capacity to provide safe and secure management of Commonwealth radioactive waste.

The Government will provide $15.0 million over five years for the establishment and operating costs of the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.

The Department was created as part of the Machinery of Government changes announced on 3 December 2007 to assume functions from three former Departments. This measure will provide the support services and functions required for an independent department.

United Nations World Tourism Organisation — continuation of membership

The Government will provide $1.7 million over four years to continue Australia's membership of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. Membership ensures that Australia has access to and can effectively engage with international tourism networks on international tourism issues including appropriate statistical standards and risk management planning.

The cost of this measure will be met from within existing resourcing of the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.
